What do you like about De Kalb?
Northern Illinois University, The Junction.

What do you dislike about De Kalb?
The locals don't like the university except for the revenue it brings in.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in?
The university, the football stadium when NIU is winning.

How expensive is it?
About what you'd expect for the Northern Illinois area. It is comparable to much of the burbs for Chicago. Gas prices are generally a bit lower.

Is it safe?
It is generally safe. Just don't be stupid at parties.

How is the weather?
The weather is... weather for the region. The part that sucks is that the city of DeKalb plows snow to the middle of the road. It makes for rough walking.

De Kalb doesn't have an Olive Garden, Circuit City, Meijer, KMart or even a MALL!!! There is a train that runs straight through 'downtown' nearly 24/7 blaring it's horn. There is no downtown for a campus town. No downtown atmosphere because of the train. The housing prices are similar to the Chicago suburbs (which is outrageous for this community). A lot of empty businesses along Lincoln Hwy. Sycamore Rd has all the businesses, Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, Walgreens, Jewel, etc... Crime is ridiculously high for this size of city. Much of it campus related, breaking into apts, stealing purses and fights. The weather is typical N. IL weather -- nothing special.
