Columbia, South Carolina has extremely little to offer in the way of an artistic community. The university around which the city revolves is sub par, and because of its large number of students the down town area is pretty much a cluster of loud bars and taverns. I would not suggest this city to anyone who is not an alcoholic or a government employee. The crime and poverty that exist in this city is extremely visible on it's streets, I have never been to a city as small as this one with as many panhandlers and street people. As far as the safety, I have lived Columbia for a year, in a relatively good neighborhood and have been robbed 4 times.

What do you like about Columbia? Small city with big city-like atmosphere. Friendly people of all races. Local colleges and military base keep new people in & out of city.
What do you dislike about Columbia? Need more tourist attractions.
What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? Vista, 5 Points, Lake Murray, Finlay Park, Williams-Brice Stadium, the Colonial Center, Village at Sandhills, Frankie's Fun Park.
How expensive is it? Relatively inexpensive. Low unemployment rate. Stable economy that's on the rise.
Is it safe? Every city has it's bad spots. Especially, a metropolitan area of over 1 million residents.
How is the weather? Only in the South could such fine weather be produced.
Additional thoughts? People who dislike Columbia, only dislike the city because they are too boring or lazy to get out and enjoy it. They probably would not enjoy any city they lived in. Columbia, SC is a great capital city!
