I hate this place. I absolutely hate it. There is no redeemable quality about it. The school districts are disgustingly bad at doing their jobs, the people are grating - there's nothing to like. Sure, maybe downtown is nice once in a while. But like hell you're going to find cerebral activity in your day to day life.

There's crime. Like, not much crime, compared to other cities. But still enough to be seen around every month locally. It's great, if you want some stories. Kids bringing guns to class, police shootouts - we have it all.

I guess the only good part is how cheap it is. I could actually work and make a profit on my life as a whole, staying here. Which is utterly miserable. I don't want to stay here. Being born in here, though, has sucked me in like a black hole. You get used to this life. It's dreary.

The weather goes to boiling and then all the way down to negative ten. If you like summer, winter will push you to your limits. Have fun with your car getting stuck in snow due to your obligation to go to work. If you like winter, I hope you like having your skin boiled off. If you like spring or fall, good luck. There's no moderation here.

Basically, what I'm saying is, please don't go here. Escape. Don't end up like me.

By the way, the artistic score is only for downtown. And by that, I mean the pretentious hipster minority downtown. It's amazing that they're one of the most tolerable cliques here.

Des Moines is a great small city. For its size (approximately 200,000 city, 600,000 metro), Des Moines has a lot to offer. While there are no professional sports, there are minor league and college (GO DRAKE!) sports. Rent is low, crime is very low (compared to other cities of its size), auto insurance rates are dirt cheap, and fuel prices are low compared to other places. Schools are excellent, and this is a great place to raise a family. Believe it or not, Iowa has much more to offer than farmland. I have two complaints about Des Moines. First off, the weather. Summers are hot and muggy; Winters can be very cold and windy (snow removal is TERRIBLE here). If you like the midwestern climate, this will be no problem for you. Second, Des Moines is not the most attractive city as a whole. While I do not consider it to be "ugly," improvements could definitely be made. There are some buildings here that are in a state of disrepair. A little landscaping and upkeep would do this city wonders. Overall, Des Moines is a great place, and I am proud to call it home!
