What do you like about Honolulu?
i) the people. Honolulu has a unique demographic found nowhere else in the world. Friendly, slow-paced, rooted in Asian & Polynesian cultures;
ii) exquisite weather. Despite incomprehensible comments by another poster, the weather is 75-85 all year long. there are occasionaly bouts of hotter, humid weather, in the low 90s, but these are unusual & not the norm;
iii) the scenery. Oahu & neighboring islands are amazingly beautiful. at times, it\'s actually hard to believe what you\'re looking at;
iv) safety; HNL is an exceedingly safe city and except for a very few areas, is safe to walk around alone any time day or night. If you\'re in Waikiki, it\'s exceedingly safe for women and children.

What do you dislike about Honolulu?
i) The traffic. The highways are like New York City, especially during rush hour. On the other hand, HNL has terrific public transportation and Waikiki is very pedestrian-friendly. If you vacation in HNL, you probably won\'t want or need a car;
ii) Cost of living, especially housing. Real estate prices are some of the highest in the country, comparable to Manhattan; staple items purchased at convenience stores in the tourist areas vary from slightly more expensive than average to a whole lot more expensive. But there are now a Wal-mart & a Sam\'s Club right downtown, & those stores have greatly moderated prices.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in?
Waikiki is an exquisite vacation destination. It combines the convenience and excitement of a New York City or Miami with safe streets, an endless selection of both world-class and authentic home-made Asian & Polynesian food, and fabulous hotels, beaches, and scenery. There are other attractions on other parts of the island, but this review focuses on HNL only.

How expensive is it?
See above. Housing is very expensive. The rest of the city is comparable to other major urban areas, like NYC or L.A. Some items, like gas, are especially pricey, like 30-50c above national average. If you\'re careful, it is possible to live here (or even vacation here) much more cheaply than you\'d think. MOnthly condo rentals a few blocks from the beach are surprisingly affordable.

Is it safe?
As stated above, very safe. I have friends on the HPD who report that the major crime problems here are: i) car break-ins when tourists leave valuables in plain view in parked cars; and ii) breaking up fights between drunks up on the North Shore, when the surfers arrive in town for the big WInter surf (about an hour or two drive from HNL).

How is the weather?
90% of the time, pretty much perfect. 15+ mph trade winds, about 80-degree highs, afternoon sprinkles in the winter. About 10% of the time, it can get cold (like into the 60s at night) or hot (low-to-mid-90s with no wind). Climate change has been making those bad-weather periods more common the last few years,

Additional thoughts?
I moved here from New York State and have never regretted it for a second. The food, weather, and lifestyle are pretty fantastic, but the best thing about HNL is the people. It takes a while for them to accept you as a local (a lot of people live here for a few years and then leave), but once they do, it\'s like having a giant city-wide family.
