What do you like about Fresno? It's international and multicultural character of all-american-town kind of. Well as temporary Fresno inhabitant from Europe I do love its central location in California (lots of sunshine, and two hours of driving in one direction and I may go for Ski on perfect snow or two hours in western direction and i may go for a swim in Pacific ocean) and a fact that this city is still improving - there is no Fresno 2006 like it was Fresno from 1996 - I like this drift and will for steady improvement there (mostly visible in northern part)
What do you dislike about Fresno? Too many pesticides in drinking water. Some pretty dirty streets in downtown. The drugs problem in southern town. And like the one person above said - there are here surprisingly quite a couple of limited white rednecks living just for beer,TV,NRA and for their own small town ambitions (although i'm white myself too but I do dislike behaviour of limited rasists a lot) or on the other hand there are moving in )among quite good folks who contribute) also plenty of "cheapskates" from LA and SF areas who want to pretend they're the "better ones" , kind of hotshots, and behaving in pathetic style kind of "I'm-better-than-you-are" coming to Fresno in recent years
What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? There are many of'm but most interesting locations and activities are actually more like in surrounding environment of Fresno area. Pretty much paradise for OUT-door activities . In the city itself it's for instance sports places accesible for free (you may play tennis, basketball etc for free) there are many cute multicultural events in or around the town, or just relaxing in Woodward park, River park, take a ride around the nice farms around the city, spend time in the artist street block in Downtown , Clovis area events and so on -- I mean this is no New York or Paris so do search only for things that are fitting to this type of area
How expensive is it? Not at all. I'd say rather cheaper and you'll have lower expenses when compared to SF,LA,Sacrmto,SanDgo, or St.Barbara
Is it safe? Basically very safe northwards up there from the Shaw Avenue , also Downtown is Ok , and since the southwestern part (the one "to-be-dangerous-with-methadon-gangs-garages") is that ugly and boring that you don't even have nothing to go for there so when you avoid this southwestern blocks then you have a pretty safe life in Fresno (very safe compared to any part of LA area or San Diego area) I'd say good for families with children who love out doors
How is the weather ? In summer perhaps too hot but you can't help it you'll just love that many sunshine days
Additional thoughts?
Just do improve the safety (western part of Down town) and mainly keep up the good work with steady improvements of quality of life and Fresno stops to be a joke and many tourist folks will get surprised about Fresno's raise to a popular "sunny raisin" of California one day.
