What I like about Catonsville: it's very central to anywhere else in the state - I can reach Pennsylvania or Washington DC quickly - and it's also near Baltimore City - I can reach most of the institutions and attractions in the city in 15 minutes or less. Also, there are lots of music stores in Catonsville. There's a fairly laid-back atmosphere.
What I dislike about Catonsville: the post office is far too small for the size of the population. The library branch is not the best in the system. Sometimes people drive like idiots on the narrow and crowded main street, Frederick Rd.
What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in?
"Temptation Row" as the Mews at Mellor is sometimes called, is an area of shops that includes a knitting shop, a cross-stitch shop, a quilting shop (all of which crafts I do), a musical instrument shop specializing in brass instruments (which my husband plays and I am interested in) and a furniture store specializing in 50's and '60's vintage furniture, which fits with the period of our house. I also like hanging out at home - we live on a small, dead-end street which is quiet yet only two blocks from major shopping areas, and within easy distance of a 24-hour drugstore, 24-hour supermarket, and 24-hour diner. And we have a pool!
How expensive is it?
About medium for the area - the size and prices of houses in Catonsville varies wildly, and one can buy a house that is huge and historic, or a teensy ranch house, and the price will vary accordingly. Water is cheap, utilities and food are average price, gas is cheaper here than in the counties closer to Washington DC.
Is it safe?
Oh yes - I like to read the Crime Watch and Police Blotter columns in the Baltimore Sun. Essex and White Marsh are in there almost every day, Towson and Pikesville every week, Timonium and Reisterstown maybe once a month - and Catonsville once a year.
How is the weather?
Great - four distinct seasons, with winter being not too long nor too cold, and summer not too long nor too hot. There's about 6 weeks of hot humid weather, compared to the 6 months I was used to in Texas. There's about 18" of snow a year, only half of the amount in cities in Pennsylvania that are only about 60 miles north of here.
Catonsville calls itself "Music City, Maryland." There are many music stores. There's a pretty popular 4th of July parade, for which people start staking out their spaces with lawn chairs about a week ahead of time - and the chairs are safe there at the curb.
Catonsville is also the home of one of the branches of Community College of Baltimore County, and a large campus of the University of Maryland, although not the main campus. Oh, and Spring Grove State Hospital, just to keep things interesting.
