What do you like about Modesto?
I love the friendly people. There is nothing to do there, so people will do anything to be social. You can literally talk to anyone. Nice people, who are very relaxed. There is a real agriculture culture there. People from the surrounding small hicktowns come into Modesto for their needs.
Water is great. Water tastes great. The water does something to your hair. Most women have beautiful thick hair in Modesto, I always say its something in the water. Or maybe its because its soooo HOT you drink water all day.

What do you dislike about Modesto?
The weather. It is really hot. If you lived in the Bay Area like I did for 10 years. You will miss it and want to go there from time to time. Other than that I found Modesto to have a great small town feel with a big enough city to be convenient.
The other thing I dont like,(but it doesnt bother me soo much because I can drive from time to time)is although Modesto is the biggest city for that area, You wont find HUGE stores there, like Nordstroms, Tiffany's, Crate and Barrel etc. It is defnately by no means a San Jose or SF.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in?
If you are to move to this city, I would tell you to get a big new house. Compared to the Bay Area, houses are affordable. My favorite part of the city is the mall, and McHenry Avenue. It is the cruising street since the 1950's in fact it was used as the cruising street in the famous movie American Graffitti.

    How expensive is it?
Im not too sure but defnatly cheaper than Bay Area. When shopping you will be able to find cheap discount stores and grocery outlets because thats what the population wants. Its not a snobby city like the one I live in now. I dont have a dollar store in my town I have to go half an hour to find one. I dont have any cheap grocery stores in my town, like Food4Less etc. But I guess its the snob factor that I am paying for here in the tri valley area.

    Is it safe?
I would say it is a safe conservative city. One of those cities where you are surprised when people leave their car windows open in the parking lot. Because it is a big city you will have your share of hoodlums but compared to Stockton or Oakland, this is a nice place to live.

    How is the weather?
The weather is unbearably hot in the summer, and strangely cold and foggy in the winter. You are in the heart of the Valley in California. But here there is fresh air, if you dont mind the occasional whiff of cow dung.

    Additional thoughts?
I had a good time in Modesto. I cannot emphasize enough the small town atmosphere of people walking down the street saying hello and chit chatting in waiting lines. I found this to be very relaxing and confidence boosting in myself. I also liked the fact that most people are down to earth conservative people. Because this is California, they arent too conservative like the South, but what I mean by conservative is people arent wild or weird like San Francisco. If you like down to earth, family oriented people, cheap stores, hot weather, and lemonade in your backyard this might be a good place to check out.

compared to stockton this place is nicely built, nicer people, better shopping. Stockton is extremely ghetto in some parts and the rich parts I found to be extremely dry and boring.

In Modesto you are about 1 and 1/2 hours away from Yosemite.
