What do you like about Reno? I like that Reno is close to wide, open areas, close to the magnificent Lake Tahoe and Sierra NV mountain range.

What do you dislike about Reno? The city is ruled most strongly by the casino industry. Good paying jobs are hard to find outside of that industry. The schools have very poor scores for college entrance exams. There is a relatively high rate of crime. The economy is highly stratified between the few who make a great deal of money and the most who typically earn low wages and live paycheck to paycheck.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? Idlewild and Rancho San Rafael park (connected) is beautifully done for such a small city. The opera is respectable and sometimes very well done. The University (of Nevada, Reno) has lovely grounds to walk as well.

How expensive is it? A two-br apmt is small (apx 750 sf) and runs typically $800 for a nice neighborhood. Homes are getting insanely overpriced right now: only very small homes in less than desirable neighborhoods can you find <$200k

Is it safe? There are no neighborhoods too dangerous to walk down if you're skin is a color different than the residents. Having said that, there is a lot of crime (robbery) and drugs (meth). Rapes and murders have increased in the decade I've been here, but I feel predominantly safe anywhere in town.

How is the weather? MAGNIFICENT (tho extremely dry) and you'll experience all four seasons! Hot and sunny summer days with cooler evenings; often a subtle transition in autumn; no parka needed for winter, a simple wool dress coat and ski wear will cover all one needs here; spring is short but nice.

Additional thoughts? Reno is ok, but we're looking to move elsewhere, Portland OR or Madison WI, predominantly.
