What I like most about Tampa is the variety of people that are here, at least in the city. The suburbs are typically uniform, of course, but in the city of Tampa there are many people of varied cultures and it makes for great restaurants, creative outlets, and a general sense of a world community. There is also work on making the arts more of a focus of the city's tourism, which I think is a fabulous move.

Some of the neighborhoods I like best are Seminole Heights and Ybor City. Seminole Heights is being remade into a kind of funky place with old buildings being refurbished and creative restaurants and art galleries going up. Ybor used to be like that, but is now more of a party scene. That being said, there are some great restaurants in Ybor City, and some fun things to do. Added bonus - Ybor looks a bit like the French Quarter in New Orleans!

I least like about Tampa its overly religious nature. It is very much a southern bible belt sort of place. This may not be true in all parts of the city, but it is overall, and I find that it makes it a more religiously conservative place - not something I find attractive about the city. In the actual city of Tampa things are a bit more liberal and comfortable to me, but there is a lot more to the Tampa area than just the city: there is a huge network of suburbs and religious conservatism oozes from them. Don't forget that this is the county that banned any public recognition of gay pride!

I can't speak for how espensive it is to live here as I have spent almost my entired adult life here and can't compare it to anything else. Some others have told me that it was a little more expensive to live here than they expected, especially given what the pay's like. Take that for what it's worth, which is hearsay. :)

I don't feel unsafe in my area of town, which is in an older part of the city. There are a few areas I might not feel too safe, but overall, even in poorer neighborhoods which some might classify as unsafe just looking at it, I have not had any problems with safety. I have never personally been a crime victim here.

I will close with the weather: stay away from May till November if you don't like hot and humid weather. Our tourist season goes all year round but is indeed heaviest in the winter because it is sublime here in the winter. That is of course when tourist things are more expensive, but for residents, that is when the living's easy.
