I moved here almost six years ago and pretty much regretted it from the start. Just driving around is a massive exercise in aggravation. Not only is the road layout a disaster, but some of the traffic lights are simply mind boggling in their frequency and duration. The weather is brutal in the summer and usually snow-less in the winter. Last year saw several 100+ degree days with humidity comparable to Florida. The job market is near non-existent with the city being rated in the top ten for the worst job growth cities in the country by Forbes magazine and having an immense illegal immigrant population taking jobs anywhere from construction workers to chefs. The city itself has little to do, lacking both the variety of a small town and the charm of a small one. The local cable company is terrible (Charter), high speed internet costs are outrageous and a large percentage of the apartments are all owned by one company. In a nutshell, there is very little good to say about this town unless you were born here and have a sentimental attachment to it.

What do you like about Singapore?
the diverse cultural food that is available.

What do you dislike about Singapore?
the govt and their highly questionable salaries and policies. their arrogance. we should outsource the entire parliament and govt to cheaper countries like India, China, Manila, Vietnam, Indonesia etc.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in?
home and quiet places.

How expensive is it?
cost of living is on the rise. govt is not controlling the no. of foreigners taking up employment and citizenship here. companies can higher cheap foreign labour at the expense of local hardworking genuine s'pore citizens (not immigrant converts) who have a family to feed and a future to save up for.

Is it safe?
generally. but with Mas Selamat on the RUN, who knows.

How is the weather?
Generally warm.

Additional thoughts?
Migration. Dont depend on the empty promises of the govt.

What do you like about Palm Springs?

The scenery can be attractive. The mountains turn purple at sunset. The architecture is generally very attractive and the color of bldgs is pastels and light and airy looking.

What do you dislike about Palm Springs?

The people are cranky, cheap and hostile. I never lived in a place that had nastier people than that desert area. Most of them were snow birds from the East, especially Chicago.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in?

It's not a hang-around-in area. Indian Wells or downtown Palm Springs could be interesting, especially on balmy Spring evenings after the sun set.

How expensive is it?

It's a lot cheaper than most of the rest of California.

Is it safe?

It's ok. There are a lot of meth users and other dope related criminals.

How is the weather?

It's unbearably hot. The first couple of summers you can endure it, but after that each summer becomes more unendurable than the one before it.
Nights might cool off in October. Nights might stay cool until May.
Hot weather starts in late January and really accellerates in April. By late June every day will be over 100 degrees and it'll stay that hot or hotter until October.
Nights from July through mid September will be in the 80s. 83 degrees will commonly be as cool as it gets for about 3 or 4 months.
I lived there from Jan 1988 until Jan 1998.
In the summer of 1995 there were 15 days where the temperature was 120 or more! The hottest day that year was 126!
I remember on an afternoon in late April when the temperature reached 119.

It's excruciatingly hot there in the summer!

What do you like about San Diego?

The geography can be nice. The beaches used to be accessible and nice. It's a great place for outdoors sporting types.

What do you dislike about San Diego?
I grew up her in the '40s, and '50s; and lived here again from '98 to 2004.
It's way too overdeveloped. It's become too crowded, and exorbitantly espensive! The housing prices and market are ridiculously exploitative. The rental situation is a complete ripoff!
There have always been too many old stingy retirees living there.
There are too many Hispanics. They amount to abouit 34% of the population. With that many there are all the undesirable conditions that prevail where they do.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in?
Balboa Park and the beaches.

How expensive is it?
Exorbitantly excessive!

Is it safe?

Some areas are somewhat safe. Lot's of crime from illegals.

How is the weather?

The weather is monotonously sunny. Way too little rain, and way too much fog and low ceiling overcast.
Additional thoughts?
Like all of California, San Diego has been ruined by allowing too much overbuilding and too many people to live there. If the water gets cut off millions will be "up the creek".

What do you like about Portland?
I picked it out because it's got some similarities to a good European city. I love the tree lined streets. It's scenically much prettier than a average American city.

There's a transportation system here that is very good in many respects; but unfortunately very poor in other respects. Mostly the system is good, but there are way too many hostile unhelpful drivers.

What do you dislike about Portland?

The attitudes of too much of the population is either surly and hostile, or indifferent and unhelpful to the point of uselessness.

The service personnel in this city are either useless knownothings or smartass know-it-alls who regard the customer with disdain.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in?

The downtown is one of the better areas inspite of the large number of homeless. Otherwise it's sporadically scattered bits and places in the huge metropolitan spread of greater Portland. Some of the older areas are actually shabby and the houses are shacks. There are a lot of strange and discordant contrasts about quality in Portland.

How expensive is it?

It's cheaper than San Diego from which I moved, but it's hardly a bargain.

Is it safe?
It's safe in highrises such as I live in, and in some neighbourhoods. There is an unusually large amount of vandalistic outbreaks in some areas. I'd be reluctant to leave a new car out on the streets. I've seen bicycles stolen or vandalized.

How is the weather?

I love the cool mild winters, and I love the rain. The summers can get too hot for me, although so far this summer (2008) has been milder than usual.

Additional thoughts?
The city is growing too fast. Most of those Californians reported by the previous reviewer are most likely Easterners who are transplants "via" California; one of the reasons I needed to leave California.
Plus there are plenty of NorthWesterners from all these NW states in all parts of California. Far too many for anyone to complain about any true Californian like myself being in any other location!
