What do you like about Chennai (Madras)? The Industrial might. Chennai is regarded as the Detroit of India. In a radius of 40kms every part of a car can be sourced from OEM Suppliers.

What do you dislike about Chennai (Madras)?
Conservative attitude of the majority of people. And the same people badmouth and consider the outgoing people of being uncultured and dirty minded. This is the core reason for the non-existence of social hangouts in the city. But yes there are social chameleons who think they are above the law. For that reason the good ones should not be denied the pleasure of social encounters.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in?
To Live: Ashok Nagar, Nungambakkam, Boat Club Road, Poes Gardens, Wallace Gardens, Harrington Road.
To Hangout: All Chennai Beaches. Special Mention to the Tiny Elliots Beach. Also include the Spencer Plaza...an excellent mall. My friends report that there is none in Mumbai to compete with it. And the Satyam Cinemas.

How expensive is it?
When comparing using a Senior Executive's Pay - Not Extremely Expensive. You can easily host one party for 4 people every month in a good beachside restaurant.
For a person Just out of College and not owning a car or bike: Extremely expensive to live in Rental is Skyrocketing and so are Bus fares. Forget about using taxis they never use the meter and want to raid your wallet for as much as they can ask. Though organised Call Taxis have a standard meter and are fair..ie do not cheat customers.

Is it safe?
Yes, rated among the safest Metro Cities in India. Crime rate is low...not many small timers and murderors around the town. But high profile robberies and only one Assasination of a National Leader has taken place 50 kms from city limits. Rape is not very common like the Capital of India - New Delhi. Sexual Harrasment at work is almost negligible. Everyone here is good at what their profession is and does not boast or guffaw about their skills at work. Though there always will be some people who do. Its not a perfect world!

How is the weather?
Excellent...Not damp......Balmy Tropical Weather...I was raised in Chennai but am from the Central part of India; Malwa Plateu. But people from the Northern and Eastern States of India may complain about humidity and lack of winter season...the Summer Packs a punch but is not sever and will not cause sunburns if you manage to sweat a little. Unlike the northern plains of the country where heat strokes and sunburns are very common in Summers. Yopu can have a fun time a the beach anyday of the year. Except when Cyclones and Low pressure hits the skies.

Additional thoughts?
Its an Industrial Hub and a good [place to work if you have trained as an Engineer in any Engineering field. The Most in Demand Fields are; Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer/IT, Marine Engineering, Civil Engineering & Architecture. The Computer & IT Industry is New to the city and is very popular in Bangalore 250miles away. But demand is not much compared to the basic engineering sectors. Architecture is booming as new industrial giants open plants here and construction of new high rises and factories is on a roll.

What do you like about Chennai (Madras)?

Chennai is like San Diego as the Robert Kanigal (Johns Hopkins Prof.) author of a biography of Ramanujam (the Indian mathematician) notes. Besides being one of the oldest cities in India, it has a lot of temples and movie billboards. It is also home to the Tamil movie industry which is a jumping point for Bollywood (that is, many South Indian heroines are discovered by Bollywood after a start in the Tamil movie industry). MGR, who was Chief Minister of TamilNadu was first a movie star.

What do you dislike about Chennai (Madras)?

Crowded - but then so is all India.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in?

Elliott's Beach used to be the best place for teenagers - quiet and lovely. But the Velankanni Church has changed all that.

Mahabalipuram (a few miles south of Elliott's Beach) is also very nice.

How expensive is it?

For people from the US - riduculously cheap.

Is it safe?

Yes.

How is the weather?

Hot but Madras (the old name of the city) gets a lot of ocean breezes and so it's not too bad.

Additional thoughts?

I love Madras and think it's a cool place to visit at least once in a lifetime - if not to live.
