The ether that underlies mere space is heavier here. Like a linen cloth folded and damp. This either has stains too, but they are honest stains, and perhaps preferable to the artificially disinfected starkness of more favoured realms.
Riding this ether, life becomes compressed, more present. As if it leaks out of the people and the earth and the sky and sits upon the city like a fog. Life with a life of it’s own frightens the unprepared, especially those used to the illusion that they can control it.
To effect change in a city like this is to try to tame that formless life and bend it to your will. But it is more alive than you. And older, far older. It has no wisdom or design. It has memories. Memories of those who have come before you with grand plans and rationales. It does not love you or hate you, but it laughs at you and with you as you learn its paradoxes and enigmas.
But these words are really too pretentious to do Dhaka justice. She curses and fights and farts alongside her lowliest inhabitants. There is much simple comradery here, but also vicious competition. A competitiveness that only the destitute can fully appreciate.
