What do you like about Charlottesville? I love that the city is very walkable, if you live in certain areas. The restaurants are generally pretty great, the Downtown Mall, and the city is just beautiful. Small but decent arts/music scene.

What do you dislike about Charlottesville? Charlottesville does a good job of hiding its lower income areas, but they definitely exist, but being Charlottesville they put gardens in the projects...The traffic on 29 and Ivy is absolutely terrible during rush hour.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? Downtown Mall, UVA Grounds and The Corner, Barracks Road Shopping Center, wineries around Albemarle County

How expensive is it? Less than a big city but more than towns of the same size.

Is it safe? For the most part. Just don't walk around late at night looking like you're carrying something valuable. Basic common sense, really...

How is the weather? Four seasons, beautiful spring and fall.

Additional thoughts? This is a pleasant, pretty mountain place that is just big enough to be considered a city. Many amenities (great restaurants, a variety of grocery stores, some nice boutiques for okay shopping) and a 2-2 1/2 hour drive to DC and 1 hour drive to Richmond. A great place to grow up or raise a family. Also, people here seem to love to run! You will always see someone jogging outside here, rain or snow. I've never seen another small city like this where everyone seems to be crazy about jogging.

What do you like about Charlottesville? It is beautiful - gorgeous mountain views, lots of trees. U.Va. is here so there's lots of history and American pride :)

What do you dislike about Charlottesville? If you are not a traditional-aged student or married with children, it is hard to find a social niche. Lots of academics = not so friendly.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? The Downtown Mall is awesome and on grounds at the University.

How expensive is it? This is the most expensive place I have lived except for Fairfax County, but that's 16 miles from D.C. I'm 16 miles from a field here. VERY expensive.

Is it safe? If you are a student, yes.

How is the weather? Beautiful spring and fall. Hot, humid summers and mild winters -- it rarely snows :(

Additional thoughts? 85% of my problem with Charlottesville has to do with the fact that in such a prime academic area (U.Va. is consistently ranked either the #1 or #2 pulic university in the U.S.), there is only ONE major bookstore, Barnes & Noble and it is SMALL, one floor, maybe 13 tables and NO music department. Poorly planned.
