What do you like about Lufkin? It has the amenities of cities much larger, such as national retail chains and resturants, great medical facilities, museums, Angelina Junior College and a top recognized zoo. Lufkin has one of the top High School football programs in Texas. Top retirement community of Pinecrest is located in Lufkin.
What do you dislike about Lufkin? Not enogh things available for the young people. Lufkin needs a water park or putt put golf complex and try to attract more entertainment for concerts. Lufkin developers leave the young people on the back burner.
What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? West or southwest side of town is the best to live IMO and is closest to shopping and hospitals if needed.

How expensive is it? It is compareable to most cities it's size with more options avaialable. Property Tax rate may be somewhat higher than most towns in comparable size, but part of this comes from the extra tax toward the Junior College. Housing cost are competitive and lower than in larger cities. All in all, not as expensive to live in Lufkin, as in a metropolitan area. I know, I have done both.
Is it safe? Overall very safe compared to metro areas, however it still depends on which part of town you hang out.
How is the weather? Cold and wet in the winter, Hot and muggy in the summer. However, we rarely have tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, never snowed in or scorching heat as other parts of the country. Would give an average rating to the weather, don't like the summer time here, but it could be worse.
Additional thoughts? I have lived here many years and have many friends here, but I have been told by some the place can be a little cliquish if you are a new comer, so I guess that existed to a degree. The job market for middle income in not as good as it could be unless your a doctor, lawyer, government employee, teacher or nurse.
