Hattiesburg is a quiet town that is attempting to retain some of the charm it had before the explosive growth of the last two and a half decades. This is both the best and the worst thing about it.

The city is strongly racially divided, and tends toward conservatism - although with a strong progressive streak inherent in both the oldest and youngest segments.

During the summer, our saying is that if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes. Just relax. It'll all be over soon.

Although the city's business community is overwhelmingly dominated by large corporate entities, some local businesses are springing up that offer new niches.
