What do you like about Newark? I enjoyed the small town atmosphere while being close to major cities like Philadelphia, Baltimore, and a little further away Washington DC and NYC. There are plenty of places to shop (small and large corporations) as well as great eateries. There is a hippie subculture and an active local night life due to having the University of Delaware right in town.
What do you dislike about Newark? I dislike how rundown a lot of the apartment complexes and neighborhoods are. The college kids take poor care of the town.
What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? Main street is bursting with great places for food and great bars. The University campus has a lot of brick so it's a pretty place to hang out around, especially during the summer or inbetween sessions when there are fewer students.
How expensive is it? Relatively cheap compared to the rest of North Delaware due to the fact that it's a college town.
Is it safe? Most areas. There's a bus system and the major streets and the campus are well lit.
How is the weather? Humid and muggy in the summer, a bit buggy in the spring, and chilly in the winter. A few snow storms every season.
Additional thoughts? This was a great place to go to college. I spent a lot of time in the town getting to know various coffee shops and stores. There's a great art community which sponsors auctions, galleries, poetry readings and writers circles, as well as independent hippie art.
