Due to Olympia being the state capital and it being influenced by not only The Evergreen State College, but also Saint Martin's University (formerly College), Olympia has a wonderful mix of college students and professionals. The downtown is full of many wonderful locally owned shops and the Farmer's Market is one of the best in the region.

What do you like about Olympia?
I like the size of Olympia....it has most things you would need/want but it is not too busy and unwieldy like Seattle.
What do you dislike about Olympia?
The prevailing culture seems to be of a certain bent...if you do not fit the mold, you are seen as inferior. For example, if you happen to drive a car rather than hike to the bus or ride a bike to work, you are seen as too material. I have been looked down upon for drinking diet soda and having cable TV...like both were too shallow.
What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? I enjoy being downtown as opposed to the outlying areas full of crowded clusters of chain stores.
How expensive is it? It is too expensive, in my opinion. When a room in someone's house full of rules is $350 plus utilities, I think it is way too expensive! I use about half of my monthly salary for a studio and I make over $25k/year.
Is it safe? Yes, I have never felt unsafe at any time.
How is the weather? It is always rainy and gray! The summers are weak. The patches of sunlight are so rare, I feel like a mole emerging from an underground hole as I squint into that shiny round ball in the sky. There is a reason everyone is so pale here!
