What do you like about Alexandria? It is very park-like, beautiful. Though the Alexandria area of Fairfax county is ugly.
What do you dislike about Alexandria? The new yuppie townhouses that are springing up everywhere. They are ugly and way overpriced.
What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? Old Town, no doubt. There are other places in Northern Virginia but for Alexandria proper, there is no other place that compares to Old Town.
How expensive is it? Single-family home in safe neighborhood will cost you at least $400K, more like $500K if you want good schools too.
Is it safe? Yes, just stay away from the housing projects and Beauregard St. and you'll be fine.
How is the weather? It used to have four seasons but in the past 15 years the winter has gotten a lot milder and more boring, IMO.
Additional thoughts? It is a tad bit less transient than Fairfax County and a VERY liberal city, which I like. People are pretty outspoken too. It feels more like the Woodley-Park area of DC than a small Virginia city. If you are looking for a great place to raise children, this is it! Buy a home in Del Ray and you can't go wrong. It is very hard for renters to make it in Alexandria due to the high cost of living.

What do you like about Alexandria? It's beauty. Green trees lots of green plush grass everywhere and beautiful homes. Also downtown Alexandria or "Old Town" is fun it's next to the river. There are many cute shops but mostly antique stores for the wealthy. Alexandria is clean and calmer than DC or Maryland.
What do you dislike about Alexandria? It's too transient. With the military and government workers my neighbors are always moving. It's very expensive. The middle class are being priced right out. Forget living here if you make under $85,000. You need at least that to live somewhat decently. I also hate the personal property taxes each year.
What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? I enjoy the riverfront, some of the cities playgrounds with my child and some of the nice malls like Tysons Corner. But if you plan on shopping there bring a big wallet.
How expensive is it?
Is it safe? Relatively speaking yes.
How is the weather? Very pleasant in the spring, too hot and humid in the summer but the winters are milder than the midwest so that's a huge plus.
Additional thoughts? Considered a suburb of DC, Alexandria is a nice place to live and raise your children of you can afford it. Renting will eat up your savings so if you can buy a house, if not this place is really not for you.
