What do you like about Albany? Four seasons, it is a good mid-point to major metropolitan areas (ie - Boston, Montreal, New York City, Philadelphia), its colleges.
What do you dislike about Albany? Aging overall population, increasing violence, inability to attract and/or keep young families, high taxes, corrupt local police force
What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? Lark Street, South Pearl Street, Washington Park, Madison Avenue
How expensive is it? High, due to high property taxes and out-of-town, downstate landlords
Is it safe? Relative to other US cities I've lived in, yes, but it is gradually becoming more violent
How is the weather? Cliche four seasons type weather. Cold, windy, snowy winters, very green springs, hot and humid summers, colorful, pleasant autumns
Additional thoughts? Area is both helped and hindered by its proximity and accessibility to New York City. It is part of the, "Capital District" of New York State and also the "Tri-Cities" area of New York State, which includes Albany, Troy, and Schenectady. The area is not far from Saratoga and other interesting and historical areas in New England. It is unfortunate that such a nationally significant part of the country is seemingly unable to preserve its past legacies and influences. What do you like about Albany? Its a pretty mellow place... You're just a few hours from many major cities... Sometimes the close-knit feel is nice. The traffic is minimal. What do you dislike about Albany? Its very much small-town, it has limited resources for those of us with alternative mind sets What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? Lark Street area How expensive is it? Dirt cheap to rent. Is it safe? Not really. Living in the not-so-nice neighborhoods I had more stupid junk to deal with than in any actual major city I lived in How is the weather? hot summer, cold winters, too much pollen in spring. Additional thoughts?
