What do you like about Lansing? It has everything you could want from a large city with the small town feel. Traffic is great for a commuter city. They take great care of the roads in the winter to keep them clear of ice and snow.

What do you dislike about Lansing? The job market is not that great. It is a manufacturing based economy and it is not doing well right know. There is a little more tax than some people like but who likes taxes.
What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? The East Lansing area is nice if your around college age. It is the home to Michigan State. The MSU sporting events give you the feel of a big city. "Lansing only has a single A Baseball Team" the Lugnuts and the games are great and very family based. Also If you like outdoor activities its a great place for hunting and fishing.

How expensive is it? Well below the national average. Housing market is very affordable.

Is it safe? I have been in all parts of town at all times of day and if you are looking for trouble you can find it but if you respect people and pay attention you'll be fine.

How is the weather? Its Michigan. Cool winters Hot Summer and spring and fall are amazing. Michigan Motto If you don't like the weather wait 5 minuets

Additional thoughts?

What do you like about Lansing? I moved to Lansing 2 years ago for graduate school at MSU. I've lived and worked in Queens NY, NYC, Torrance CA, and Chapel hill NC but comparing Lansing to these cities is really unfair since Lansing is a largely a working class city, still coughing up blood from death of the local auto industry. Lansing as good schools and cheap housing but don't expect much else in terms of culture, cusine, or nightlife.

What do you dislike about Lansing? Although Lansing is a fairly diverse city, everyone seems to have one thing in common: they all want to go somewhere else. It's not hard to see why considering Lansing does not offer much other than schools and affordable living. And the local business and industry reflects this: good resturants are hard to find, liquor stores on every corner, nothing opens late that is not pizza or alcohol. For the most part the people in Lansing tend to be less educated than people of similar size cities and upon meeting a few locals, this insecurity often filters through as rudeness. But my friends are very nice people.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and hang out in?
Downtown Lansing proper has the captial building which is nice to look at. But the whole city is basically supported by Cooley law school students (the largest open-admissions law school in the country) and city/government workers. So nightlife consists of a handful of resturants and clubs near Washington St. with drunk law students who all want to be at a better law school.
Oldtown lansing is just North of Lansing and is very charming with overpriced small shops and organic cafes at attempt to add a bit of sophistication to Lansing living but the shops mostly cater to people with money and absolutely no taste.
How expensive is it? Very cheap. Just aviod shops that try to sell you things that you can get at a TJmax for 200% cheaper.

Is it safe? 2 murders in the last 2 months, just on my block. Murder must be back in voge in Lansing.

How is the weather? All 4 seasons (more biased twoards winter)

Additional thoughts? The term "fly-over-city" as never been so apt to describe a city like Lansing. To be fair, there has been recent attempts to revitalize the city but if your thinking about investing here, just realize that the city still has not flatlined yet...
