South Bend is an intriguing city that benefits greatly from the intellecutal and cultural center of the University of Notre Dame. It has the advantages of a mid-sized city including great shopping, dining and entertainment but retains the homey feel of the Midwest.

The only good thing about South Bend is its central location to my two favorite places: Milwaukee and Pittsburgh. The shopping here is pretty good, but doesn't have everything that I'd like to find. Dining is average, and entertainment is mediocre, at best.
My favorite people to hang out with are college students from other areas of the US who understand how lame this city really is.
The apartment I live in is pretty cheap, so I guess the cost of living isn't bad.
I don't think the city is safe. It's dirty and has a lot of lower class citizens. Last Fall we utilized a storage complex while we were at school in West Lafayette, and the units were broken into. We had a few items stolen.
The weather isn't terrible. It's typical for the midwest. Humid and rainy.
I vow to never live here for an extended period of time. This city is depressing. Another reviewer stated it best: South Bend looks great in your rear view mirror.
