What do you like about St. Petersburg? The art/activist culture, the concerts, the beaches, the interesting people, sometimes the climate

What do you dislike about St. Petersburg? The poverty, the current construction, rising housing costs, sometimes the climate

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? Downtown: I go to school down there, the cafes and concert venues are nice.

How expensive is it? Costs are rising fast, especially downtown. Entertainment costs aren't bad: local concerts aren't too pricy, and Cafes like The Globe are inexpensive places to shoot the breeze, play board games, or listen to live music.

Is it safe? The during day is fine. Going out alone at night is very risky. The homeless people (there are many) are usually harmless, but I tend to keep my distance. Anyone used to urban living and it's perils should be fine.

How is the weather? I don't like to go outside during the middle of the day from about April - August. The weather is usually very pleasent at night. Storms - tropical, thunder, hurricanes - are pretty regular. As they have never done me or anyone I know any harm, I happen to like them.

Additional thoughts? Downtown is a haven for activists: Anarchists, Uhuru movement members, gays, anti-war activists, what have you. Take it or leave it.

What do you like about St. Petersburg?
Great Beaches, Bustling Nightlife, Restaurants, lot's of free concerts.

What do you dislike about St. Petersburg? The Sticky Heat, Hurricane Season, Too many transplanted Yankees with attitude. Traffic is bad on the interstate between Tampa and St. pete too.

What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? Beach, Downtown Area, Pier, Our Fantastic waterfront parks, and our free concerts down at Vinoy Park.

How expensive is it? Much more expensive than it used to be, housing costs are 5x what they were 8 years ago. My house I bought 8 yrs ago for 62k is now worth 250k. Expect to pay at least 200k for a 1400 Sq foot house on the north side of town. (the more desirable/safer area)

Is it safe? South Side is to be avoided unless you like crack or have a penchant for car jacking. The Downtown area's and parks are reasonably safe.

How is the weather? Hot, Humid, Hurricane Alley.

Additional thoughts?
St. Petersburg is changing drastically, it used to be a haven for elderly people and I grew up here as a kid when it was like that, I thought it was boring, well I miss all the old people, they were nicer than all the yankees that bought their homes when the elderly died. Yes, it has more culture now, more multiplex theatre's, more live theatre, and more starbucks and bookstores and other hipper things, but we've traded our quiet relaxed living with a more hectic and more dangerous one. Traffic is bad, Affordable housing is non-existent (all the rental apartments have been converted to condo's for resale due to escalating housing costs) I still like it though and all though I complain about it, I still choose to live here.
