What do you like about Santa Barbara?: Nearly perfect weather year-round, tons of outdoor activities, great restaurants. has museum, ballet, opera, symphony.
What do you dislike about Santa Barbara?: the cost, can be hard to find a niche where you "fit in", hard for the 30-something crowd (for work/things to do), can be a bit too sleepy of a town.
What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? Downtown, butterfly beach, ll the beaches, Montecito.
How expensive is it? Insane. We pay nearly $2000.00 for a 2 very small 2 bedroom downtown with the tiniest 1 bathroom ever. Almost no storage, no yard, no garage. Crazy.
Is it safe? Very but some of the Milpas area is not safe.
How is the weather? Flawless most of the year. It is what has kept us here despite the cost.
Additional thoughts? My guess is that to live "comfortably", you really need at least $100,000.00 a year household income. You will feel like you are struggling alot here without a good income.

What do you like about Santa Barbara? the mountains, ocean, the smell of the air away from the actual city and the calmness
What do you dislike about Santa Barbara? the pervading culture...the lack of friendliness...the lack of chaos
What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? isla vista, the ellwood mesa, cold springs trail & other numerous trails.
How expensive is it? alienatingly & unrealistically expensive. A large majority of lower wage workers have to commute here. People who are born here often have to move from the city or continue to live with their parents when they are of age to support themselves because of high housing costs.
Is it safe? yes for now. it is an island of law enforcement & wealth-induced safety. but if law enforcement didn't exist, this place would probably be the first on alot of lists to loot. ...aye matey!
How is the weather? 67 degrees, clear skies almost year round...bland but the clouds and heavy fog over the mountains can be nice.
this is a great place in many ways, but i often wish it would completey change. does that make sense? sorry to generalize but people here seem to be more charitable with their money than with their spirit.
