What do you like about San Diego? I love the beaches, the mountains, nightclubs (best club scene aside from NYC), and natural attractions.
What do you dislike about San Diego? The downtown crowd--superficial-by-association (it is hard to crack the superficial shell people form when they move here when the cost of living and rat race takes its toll). There is a superiority complex and people make it a point not to make eye contact at times--Very hard to meet good people. My first year was somewhat difficult.
What are your favorite parts of the city to live and/or hang out in? South Downtown--Gaslamp, Del Mar, Balboa Park, Mission Beach, Carlsbad.
How expensive is it? Extremely, especially when considering there is always something you "need" that you wouldn't elsewhere once you actually do have disposable income.
Is it safe? Very. The bums are insane though. Just don't move to the eastern part of downtown or south of the city.
How is the weather? Perfect 7 or 8 months of the year. Gloomy for 2 months and a bit chilly--from north winds-- starting november into mid-march.
Additional thoughts? This is the kind of place most people love and hate. When you are hating it you struggle to figure out why, which I suppose is a good thing. It is easy to get caught up in the rush and beauty of the place. That rush is contrasted by the lazy beach scene that tries to drain your ambition. I guess in such a great climate you get spoiled with weather and activity, but you miss the genuine nature of people outside of SoCal and other glam-culture spots. I will always miss this place when I leave and never fully understand the strange (sometimes uninviting), but exciting social atmosphere. It is definitely the most beautiful city in the country.
