I grew up, and and growing up, in Walsall.
The council try their best, erecting statues and fountains and building it up, trying to keep the market alive and generally trying very hard. However, it doesn't quite work, and in Walsall a permanent aroma of chip fat and petrol seems to linger. There are lots of pubs and clubs, and it is a very multi-racial town, but these two do not necessarily go together. After Friday nights of white racists gathering and drinking, there is usually carnage.
There is usually a clique of teh generation hanging around at the relatively new, and disfuctional, fountain in the centre of town. These groups are never intimidating however, it is quite subdued up there. Tesco is my favourite place to 'hang out'. Having said that, Walsall being the fattest town in Britain, most people 'hang out' everywhere.
The town is average in expense. There are plenty of charity shops and of course the market for people strapped for cash. Let us say, Walsall is not upmarket, though it has its posher areas.
Crime levels are fairly normal, though Friday nights near the town hall get very rowdy. The short skirts and low tops rule OK.
Walsall has very mild weather for England. We never get an extreme of temperature, as it is fairly high up altitude-wise and in teh middle of the country, so moderate.
I never loved Walsall, though it had its up points and still does. Watch out for chavs and marauding gangsta rappers though.
